March 2015 School News

4th March 2015
Dear Parents,
Despite the weather, spring is now well and truly upon us and our busy little school continues to motor along! Here is the news for March.
·        Our current Green Flag theme is Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste. This term we have been really working hard on this theme, in 2 ways. Firstly we are looking at being kind to the natural world and supporting biodiversity (plants, animals, planting in our developing garden and recycling etc.) Secondly we have been working on the global citizenship theme with a view to being kind to and understanding the interconnected human-world (with visiting speakers from varying cultural backgrounds, speakers from Fingal County Council talking about its work in our local community and Trocaire talking about people using natural resources to help communities around the world.) At the senior end of the school the issues involved and discussed can be quite complex and in some cases contested.  At all times our work on this theme has the aim of fostering and promoting in our pupils attitudes of tolerance, respect and understanding of our interconnected natural world and also our human world, at school, local, national and international levels. With this in mind, parents are asked to support their children’s learning and to discuss positively such curricular themes.
·        Walk to school: another aspect of our Green Flag work is walking to school each morning from the Coolquay Lodge for these 2 weeks. (Following this we will revert to walking on Fridays.)   So, for these 2 weeks teachers will be at the Lodge by 8.45am with high-viz jackets and leave for Kilcoskan NS daily at 8.50am.  We’re hoping to have a “scoot to school” day next week too, although with the road being busy we may have to change this to a “scoot at school” day, where pupils can bring in their scooters if they have them. The appointed day will be communicated next week.
·        On Friday 27th March we will be holding a Texas Hold’em Poker night in the Coolquay Lodge, from 8pm. Tickets are now available for €50 from reception – we hope to sell 50 tickets for the big night. If we sell all our tickets this card evening could have a top prize of up to €1250 – so, the more tickets bought the merrier as they say! Anybody who thinks they could sell a few tickets is asked to contact us at the school.
·        Batteries: we continue to collect all sorts of batteries at the school, from the smallest watch batteries up to big car batteries. Our target is 1 tonne of batteries for which we’ll get €1000 to be spent on our school garden.  Thanks to the many parents who have dropped in batteries...more more more please!!!
·        School Self Evaluation: Please complete the maths school self evaluation survey that went home with pupils on Monday and return it to the school by Friday 6th March – this is an extension to the original deadline of Wednesday 4th March. This should only take 5 minutes to complete.
·        Parents Association matters: our KNS PA newsletter is attached to this school newsletter. The Parents Association are hosting a parental workshop hosted by Barnardos next Wednesday March 11th at 7.30pm in the school. See attached for more information.
·        World Book Day is this Thursday 5th March and all pupils have received book vouchers. This year we’ll have our Book Day Fancy Dress in term 3.
 School closures:
St.Patrick’s weekend: School is closed on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th March.

Easter holidays: School closes at 12pm on Friday 27th March and reopens on Monday 13th April 2015 at 9am for a full day.
